Blue Ridge Independent School District is proud to announce the swearing in of Pete Copin as the first Chief of Police for the Blue Ridge ISD Police Department, marking a historic milestone in the district’s ongoing commitment to student and staff safety.
Chief Copin has served as the district’s Director of Safety & Security since July 2025, helping lead the work to establish the Blue Ridge ISD Police Department following Board approval of the department’s creation in April 2025. Since joining the district, he has played an instrumental role in building the foundation for the new department and advancing Blue Ridge ISD’s comprehensive approach to school safety.
The swearing in of Chief Copin represents the official launch of the Blue Ridge ISD Police Department and the next step in the district’s efforts to provide a dedicated law enforcement presence focused on protecting students, staff, and visitors across all campuses and facilities.
“The swearing in of Chief Copin is an important moment for Blue Ridge ISD,” said Superintendent Dr. Darrell Floyd. “Since joining our district, he has provided strong leadership, valuable expertise, and a clear vision for what school safety should look like in Blue Ridge ISD. We are grateful for his work in helping bring this department to life and are confident in his leadership as our first Chief of Police.”
Chief Copin brings more than 36 years of distinguished law enforcement experience to the role. Before coming to Blue Ridge ISD, he served as Chief of Police for A+ Charter Schools, where he developed training programs, implemented emergency operations plans, and led behavioral threat assessment initiatives. He also previously served in leadership roles with Melissa ISD Police Department and Anna Police Department, among others, and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps.
He holds a Master Peace Officer License and is certified in Behavioral Threat Assessment, ALERRT, and School-Based Law Enforcement. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from LeTourneau University.
“I am honored to serve as the first Chief of Police for Blue Ridge ISD,” said Chief Copin. “Over the past several months, I have been grateful for the opportunity to work alongside district leadership and staff to build this department from the ground up. I look forward to continuing that work and serving the Blue Ridge community by helping provide a safe and supportive environment where students can learn and thrive.”
The Blue Ridge ISD Police Department was established as part of the district’s continued focus on strengthening campus safety, emergency preparedness, and positive relationships between law enforcement and the school community.
Blue Ridge ISD is grateful to Chief Copin for his leadership and dedication throughout this process and looks forward to this new chapter in the district’s safety efforts.
